Website Redesign Checklist: Protect Your Google Rankings

A website redesign can lift enquiries, or it can wipe out years of Google rankings. The difference is planning. This checklist covers what to review before, during and after a redesign so you gain a better site without losing the traffic you already have.

Is it time to redesign?

Consider a redesign if several of these are true:

  • The site looks dated or does not work well on a phone.
  • Pages load slowly, especially on mobile.
  • Visitors arrive but few call or fill in the form.
  • You cannot edit the content without a developer.
  • The site is built on old software that no longer gets security updates.
  • Your brand, services or prices have changed.

Before the redesign

  1. Set a goal. Pick one or two measurable aims, such as more enquiries or faster loading.
  2. Record your current performance. Note your traffic, your top pages and the keywords you rank for in Google Search Console.
  3. List every URL. Crawl the site and export all pages. This is your redirect map later.
  4. Find your best pages. Keep the pages that rank and bring leads. Do not delete them casually.
  5. Back up the old site. Keep a full copy of files and database.

During the redesign

  1. Keep URLs the same where you can. Every changed address needs a redirect.
  2. Carry over page titles, descriptions and headings from pages that already rank, unless you are improving them on purpose.
  3. Build for mobile first. Most visitors in India browse on phones.
  4. Compress images and use a fast host. Aim for pages that load quickly on a mobile connection.
  5. Improve content, not just looks. Add clear service descriptions, FAQs, contact details and calls to action.
  6. Build on a test copy and block it from Google so the unfinished site is not indexed.

At launch

  1. Put 301 redirects in place from every old URL that has changed to its new page.
  2. Remove the block that kept the test site out of Google. This is a common mistake, so check your robots settings and the noindex setting.
  3. Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console.
  4. Test forms, phone links, payment steps and tracking codes.
  5. Check that the pages show up correctly on a phone.

After launch

  • Watch Search Console daily for the first two weeks for crawl errors and 404 pages.
  • Fix broken links and missing redirects quickly.
  • Compare traffic and rankings with your baseline. A small dip for a few weeks can be normal, but a large, lasting drop means something was missed.
  • Keep publishing useful content. A redesign is a start, not a finish.

Common mistakes

  • Changing all URLs without redirects.
  • Leaving the test site blocked from Google after launch.
  • Dropping pages that bring in traffic.
  • Making the site look better but slower.
  • Forgetting tracking and form testing.

FAQ

How long does a website redesign take? A small business site often takes four to eight weeks, depending on the number of pages and how quickly content is approved.

Will a redesign hurt my Google rankings? It can if URLs change without redirects or good pages are removed. With a proper plan, rankings usually hold and often improve.

How often should I redesign my website? Many businesses refresh every three to five years, with smaller updates in between.

Should I redesign or just fix the current site? If the problems are speed, a few pages or content, fixing may be enough. If the platform is outdated or the structure no longer fits your business, a redesign is better.
